Esther and the Avocado Tree is the story of a young girl (Esther) and her relationship with the splendid avocado tree growing in her backyard. As Esther grows older and becomes a mother herself, the avocado tree’s life comes to an end. With Esther’s help, the seed from its last fruit allows the beginning of a new tree, starting the process once again.

“I was inspired to write Esther and the Avocado Tree by my three loves : love for my daughter, love for all growing things on this earth.. and of course by my endless and abiding love for avocados.

I am a Canadian, and as such I live six months of every year in a cold, grey, lifeless environment. Esther and the other Striped Aardvark creatures are inspired by my need for colour. When these vibrant, improbable and expressive creatures appear from my pens and brushes, almost by magic.. I feel, every time, a jolt of warmth and creativity. A reminder that even in this cold dark hinterland, new life is already pushing its way to the surface.”
